One member of the University of Missouri Extension Council of Jasper County was re-elected and nine were newly elected in the balloting that ended January 28, 2008, according to John Dillard, council chair.

The re-elected member is Donald Blankenship, Carthage. Newly elected members are: Sherry Block, Waylon Miller, Dixie Rockers, David and Joyce Shaw, and Dorothy Shull, Carthage; Rick Brockman, Sr., Joplin; Bryan Massey, Asbury; and Marilyn Thornberry, Webb City.

These members will serve two year terms and join the following hold-over members: Oscar Barahona, John and Helen Dillard, Henry and Linda Leaming, Kate Massey, Glenn and Karen Moll, Marlene Payne and Lora Phelps.

Currently, the appointed members to the council are: Tami Frederickson (Farm Bureau), Jim Honey (County Commission), Jim West (City of Joplin) and Michele Hansford (City of Carthage).

The council has four major responsibilities. They are: (1) to advise the University of Missouri on needed extension educational programs, (2) approve the extension staff housed in Jasper County, (3) arrange for financing the Jasper County Extension Center and, (4) hold elections to perpetuate the Council.

Officers for the 2008 Council will be elected at the annual meeting being held at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage, Tuesday evening, February 12, 2008.
