State forest nursery's seedling sale is underway vbryan
Updated: 2008-11-18 08:44:04
The time has arrived again to place an order for seedling trees and shrubs from the Missouri Department of Conservation's George O. White State Forest Nursery. For 60 years the nursery near Licking, MO has been offering Missouri landowners a wide variety of seedlings for reforestation, windbreaks, erosion control, as well as wildlife food and cover. Reservations for trees, according to Ed Browning, county program director for the University of Missouri Extension, are made on a "first-come, first serve" basis, and many species sell out quickly.

In addition to individual species choices, several bundles of mixed species, designed for special purpose plantings may be purchased. These include a conservation bundle, wildlife cover bundle, extra-large nut tree bundle and a quail cover bundle. Seedling bundles range from $4 to $30 and when available may be picked up or shipped directly to the purchaser.

Free advice for persons planning to make large plantings is available. University of Missouri Guide Sheets: "How to Plant Forest Trees" (G5008), Before You Order Tree Seedlings" (G5006), "Planting Tree Windbreaks in Missouri" (G5900), and "Mechanical Tree Planting" (G5009) are available at the University of Missouri Extension Center in each county as well as from an agent of the Missouri Department of Conservation.
